A TQP (Trades Qualified Personnel) Fire Alarm Inspection is a state-mandated test of your fire detection and notification systems to ensure they function properly and meet safety codes. In areas like Vermont, technicians performing these tests must carry a specialized TQP Certification of Fitness.

These inspections are primarily for commercial properties and multi-family residential units, though they can apply to specific types of residential properties depending on local laws.

Fire safety regulations vary based on how a building is used. Find out if your property requires a TQP inspection:

• Commercial Properties (Required): Public buildings, offices, retail spaces, warehouses, and industrial facilities must undergo mandatory annual TQP fire alarm inspections to maintain compliance with state fire codes.
• Multi-Family Residential & Rentals (Required): While private single-family homes are exempt, TQP inspections are required for apartment buildings, multi-family complexes, and short-term rental properties (such as Airbnb or VRBO) to meet strict municipal safety standards.
• Private Single-Family Homes (Not Required): Standard private residences do not require commercial TQP testing, though regular safety checks are always recommended.

In Vermont, fire and life safety inspections must be performed by a technician holding a Technician Qualification Program (TQP) Certificate of Fitness issued by the Division of Fire Safety.

• Fire Alarm Systems: Required annually.
• Fire Sprinkler & Fixed Extinguishing Systems: Required annually (with specialized internal piping inspections every 5 years).
• Fire Extinguishers: Required annually.
• Licensing Note: While system inspections are yearly, individual technician TQP licenses are renewed every three years.

New Hampshire mandates periodic safety inspections based on adopted NFPA codes. Systems must be tested by technicians holding valid state-level or NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) credentials.
